Alaskan Malamute
Health & Care
Health Concerns:
Perhaps the biggest health issue in the canine world is Hip Dysplasia.
The issue is talked about in several ways. One approach is to deny its
existence. Another is to state that adults are certified by the Orthopedic
Foundation for Animals and to assume that this OFA certification prevents
puppies from inheriting the disease. Actually, research suggests that Hip
Dysplasia may be more prevalent in many breeds than is commonly believed.
And, because it is inherited via multiple genes, the 30 year effort toward
its eradication, by almost all ethical dog breeders has been less successful than desired.
Approaching
the Controversy: Although Hip Dysplasia is a controversial
topic for many, we believe that the best approach to the problem is to
be well informed. At Northern Legend Kennel, all adult Alaskan Malamutes
are evaluated using the PennHIP Hip x-ray protocol. This technology provides
concrete measurements that can be used in breeding decisions. In addition
to x-ray procedures, A Complete Blood Chemistry analysis is done on all
dogs. The information from this analysis is used to develop a nutritionally
balanced feeding and supplement program to meet
unique needs of individual animals.

Physical Examination:
Basic health procedures impacting puppies begin before birth with the care
given to all of our adult animals and especially to females during pregnancy.
Puppy worming and other required health procedures begin at birth and are
based on veterinarian recommendations. At six weeks of age, each of our
puppies visits the veterinarian for a complete physical examination and
to begin their series of inoculations and immunizations.
Puppy Temperament
Evaluation: Experts suggest that there may be as much variance
between puppies in a litter as there is between breeds of dogs. For that
reason, we do a personality temperament evaluation of each puppy at seven
weeks of age. This information helps owners choose a puppy that best fits
their lifestyle, and to understand the specific personality and needs of
their new companion.
