 ALASKAN MALAMUTES
Mission Statement of Northern Legend Kennel
The Northern Legend Alaskan Malamute Kennel is committed to the Alaskan Malamute as a companion dog. We believe that a personal relationship must be developed with each of our purebred Alaskan Malamutes in order to form the bond necessary for an enjoyable human-canine relationship. We also believe that kennel size and ratio of dogs to human contact people, is an important factor in developing this relationship.

Considering Ownership of an Alaskan Malamute?

At Northern Legend Kennel, we believe that bringing an Alaskan Malamute into a family should be a carefully considered decision. Nothing is more heart breaking than to see a Malamute in a dog pound, running loose, or dead on the road because the decision to adopt was made without complete information and consideration. We are willing to provide, without obligation, information to anyone considering such a decision.

Who We Are
Drs. Charlene and Jim Akenhead, owners of Northern Legend Kennel, have been married for over 40 years. Their first home was on a family farm where they had the opportunity to raise and train German Shepard dogs. Jim and Charlene have been career educators, counselors, and consultants for over 40 years. Charlene's early interest in animals was evident as she presented many fine show cattle in state and regional competition. She has made several trips to Alaska and has attended the Iditarod Sled Dog Race. Charlene has received awards for contributions to community service organizations. Jim has completed the intensive Professional Trainer Certification program of the National K-9 Learning Institute in Columbus, Ohio. Recently, Jim was honored at Commencement Ceremonies of Bowling Green State University as a distinguished graduate for his professional and community contributions. In 1995, Charlene and Jim were jointly honored as Business and Professional Persons of the Year, by a local service organization.

Charlene and Jim's interest in dogs and training is shared by their son Matt who is an experienced mid distance musher. Matt started in AKC obedience competition with adults when he was in the third grade. He is now a full time certified professional dog trainer. Matt owns Signature K-9, a full service training and behavior management facility in Alliance, Ohio.

After spending several years as the pit crew for " The Ice Pack ", Matt's Alaskan Husky racing team, Charlene and Jim became avid fans of northern dogs. This experience in the early 90's and Jim's life long dream to own Alaskan Malamutes coupled with the help of many experienced mushers, trainers, and breeders opened the door for Northern Legend Kennel as a home for AKC Alaskan Malamutes as companion dogs.

At Northern Legend Kennel, we realize the importance of keeping up with new ideas, and research as well as tapping into the knowledge and experience of other canine professionals. Our commitment is to improve the long term quality of life for the Alaskan Malamute in relationship with human partners. This commitment has resulted in practices such as Penn Hip x-ray protocol and complete blood analysis of each dog resulting in a prescribed feed and supplement program designed to enhance health and longevity of our dogs and puppies.

In keeping with our commitment to continuously improve, we attend a variety of seminars and training sessions which enhance our understanding of dogs and their behavior. Interest in breeding led us to complete the Canine Reproduction Seminar at the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Interest in temperament and behavior resulted in attendance at seminars such as: Wolf Park's intensive Wolf and Dog Behavior, program based on 25 years of wolf pack research; "Legacy International Training Camp" which focuses on operant conditioning; John Fisher's "Dog Behavior Analysis" seminar; Terry Ryan's seminar on "Problem Solving and Group Training"; Dr. Pamela Reid's "Excel-erated Learning" seminar; Cheryl Smith's "Canine Aggression, Biting and Fighting" seminar and the "Montana Sled Dog Symposium".

Sales and Adoptions

Feel free to contact us via Email, US Mail, telephone, or to schedule a visit to get a first hand feel for the Giant Alaskan Malamute. If the adoption of a Northern Legend Alaskan Malamute is undertaken, we believe that agreement to such points as follow is necessary to provide the foundation for a positive relationship: Buyers must agree to provide quarters in or in the proximity of their home; not to make the Malamute available to research centers or volume sales operations; and to provide recommended veterinary care for the Malamute. Northern Legend Kennel guarantees that the Malamute will be in good health at the time of the sale and for 48 hours thereafter as verified by buyer's veterinarian. Additional information about guarantees and conditions of a sale/adoption are stated in a formal agreement to be signed by all parties.
