The following are our Alaskan Malamutes.

What is A Giant Alaskan Malamute? The term "Giant Alaskan Malamute" has been given to lines of purebred Malamutes that are consistently larger than the size currently suggested for the breed. Some dog enthusiasts enjoy and appreciate these large animals and some do not. Because Giant Malamutes can get so large, it is important to keep a Malamute's weight in proportion to its body size. This is especially important during the two year growth period from puppy to adult. Making a dog as heavy as possible in order to have "bragging rights" may ultimately shorten the life of a dear friend. The Giant Alaskan Malamutes at Northern Legend Kennel are large, big boned animals. Females generally weigh 90 to 115 1bs. while males generally weigh 110 to 140 1bs. Weights as high as 190 1bs. have been reported in the Wakon bloodline. |
Our facility has fourteen outside Mason chain link kennels which average 20'L x 6'W x 6'4"H. One half acre is fenced with four foot chain link fence and is used as an exercise area (more is planned). Two inside facilities are in use. One is a 40' by 24' building used for inside kennels and a training room. The other is a 25' by 25' facility attached to the house which houses inside kennels and is used for whelping puppies. Inside facilities have available heat and air conditioning.

Each dog has a personal outside kennel and an inside kennel used for sleeping and for relaxation during the day when it is too hot outside or during severe storms. Each outside kennel has a wood floor made in 6' x 2' sections of wood decking which can be removed for easy cleaning. The outside kennels also have a specially designed four foot by six foot sand pit for urination and deification which makes for efficient clean up. Inside kennels are also made from Mason chain link panels and vary in size from 6'L x 4'W x 6'H to 4'L x 3'W x 4'H depending on dog size. Inside kennels have concrete floors sealed with epoxy.
Our Alaskan Malamutes are moved from inside to outside kennels each morning and back again each evening. Each dog spends time in the house with us every day. We believe that this consistent handling and visitation time combined with a basic obedience training program does much to enhance our relationship.
